Is it safe to travel to Guatemala?
As with anywhere in the world, caution is needed to avoid things like pickpockets or scams, but overall, Guatemala is safe for travel. Avoid areas known for high crime rates and don't go looking for trouble, and you'll be fine.
Is tap water safe in Guatemala?
You shouldn't drink the tap water while in Guatemala; stick to bottled or filtered water. Most restaurants use commercial ice, which is safe. But if you are worried, you can say "sin hielo" (without ice). I had ice in nearly all my drinks without issue.
Is Guatemala a good tourist destination?
Absolutely! You'll find plenty of top-notch hotels, outstanding food, and tons of things to do — especially in Lake Atitlán, Antigua, and Flores.
Should I speak Spanish to visit Guatemala?
You can get around using a translation app and playing charades, but knowing some basic Spanish will get you A LOT further.
Is it safe to visit Guatemala City?
Crime rates are definitely higher in Guatemala City (which can be said for most larger cities). Tourists should stick to Zones 9, 10, 13, 14, and 16, and you should use common-sense precautions when out at night.
Do I need a plug adapter in Guatemala?
Guatemala uses the two flat pin North American style plug. If you use something else, you'll need an adapter. I travel with this universal adapter that allows me to use plugs basically anywhere.
