Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to go to Alaska?

For the best weather and to take advantage of all that midnight sun, the best times to visit Alaska are the summer months: June, July, and August.

How long should you spend in Alaska?

Forever! Alaska is one of my favorite places on the planet, so I may be biased. But seriously, it is a BIG state. You'll need at least a week to make any headway.

How much does a trip to Alaska cost?

Alaska can be a fairly expensive destination, mostly due to its remoteness. But like most places it can be as expensive as you want it to be! Expect to spend at least $100 per day per person.

Should I take an Alaskan Cruise?

A cruise is a great way to get a taste of Alaska, but just know that the majority of your time will be on the boat.

Do you need a car when visiting Alaska?

It depends. If you are staying in Anchorage, you can probably get by without renting a car. But if you want to travel from town to town, a car will be quite helpful. Just know that not everywhere is accessible by road. For example, you can't drive to Utqiagvik (formerly known as Barrow).

Is there really "midnight" sun in Alaska?

Yep! But not everywhere. Anchorage sees about 22 hours of daylight in June, and places like Kodiak have about 18 hours of sun. In Utqiagvik, they have 80 days of sunlight (and 67 days of darkness in winter).
