6 Unforgettable Day Trips from Chiang Mai
While the city of Chiang Mai certainly has enough to keep you busy, the surrounding areas also deserve to be explored. Here are 6 day trips from Chiang Mai that should definitely be on your travel itinerary.
THAILAND
Chiang Mai had my heart from day one. (Seriously, I was looking up apartments for rent from my Airbnb!) With its ancient temples, bustling night markets, and incredible food scene, it’s easy to fill your itinerary without ever leaving the city limits.
But you must venture into the lush, mountainous countryside that surrounds it.
The region is a treasure trove of cultural experiences, natural wonders, and adventurous activities, all within a few hours' drive. Whether you’re seeking serenity, adrenaline, or a deeper cultural connection, there’s a perfect excursion waiting for you.
To help you choose, we've curated a list of the six best day trips from Chiang Mai.

Doi Inthanon National Park
No list of day trips from Chiang Mai is complete without a visit to Doi Inthanon National Park, home to the highest peak in Thailand. This isn’t just about bragging rights; it’s about experiencing a completely different ecosystem of misty forests, majestic waterfalls, and sacred pagodas.
What to Do: Hike the Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail, a stunning jungle walk with breathtaking views (open Nov-May). Visit the twin Royal Pagodas, built to honor the King and Queen, which stand amidst beautifully landscaped gardens often above the clouds. Don’t miss the powerful Wachirathan and Sirithan waterfalls, especially during the rainy season.
Good for: Nature lovers, hikers, and photographers.
Travel Time: ~1.5 - 2 hours drive from Chiang Mai.
To get to Doi Inthanon, I rented a car. It was a fairly easy drive (even though I'm used to driving on the other side of the road!). GPS got us there without hassle, but if you don't feel comfortable driving, you can check out this tour instead.

Elephant Encounters
For many, interacting with elephants is a dream, but it's crucial to choose a sanctuary that prioritizes animal welfare over entertainment. Elephant Freedom Village is owned by members of the indigenous Karen tribe, and their relationship with their elephants emphasizes the welfare of the animals.
What to Do: Feed the elephants, watch them bathe, and hike through the forest with elephants by your side.
Good for: Animal lovers, families, and responsible travelers.
Travel Time: ~1+ hour drive from Chiang Mai.
Doi Suthep-Pui National Park
If you’re short on time but want a significant taste of nature and culture, Doi Suthep is your answer. Dominating the skyline west of Chiang Mai, this mountain is home to the city’s most sacred temple and beautiful jungle.
What to Do: Climb the 306-step Naga staircase (or take the tram) to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a glittering gold temple with unparalleled views of the city. Continue further into the park to visit Bhubing Palace, the royal winter residence, and the small, peaceful Hmong village of Doi Pui.
Good for: Culture, easy access, and a half-day trip.
Travel Time: ~45 minutes - 1 hour from the Old City.

Sticky Waterfalls (Bua Tong)
One of the most unique and fun day trips from Chiang Mai is to the Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls. Unlike any other waterfall, the limestone deposits here create a porous, grippy surface that allows you to literally climb up the cascades without ropes or special equipment!
What to Do: Climb up the tiers of the waterfall—it’s an exhilarating and bizarre feeling! The mineral-rich water is refreshing, and the surrounding area is perfect for a picnic. It’s a fantastic and active way to spend a morning.
Good for: Adventure seekers, families with older kids, and anyone looking for a unique experience.
Travel Time: ~1 hour 15 minutes drive north of Chiang Mai.
Samoeng Loop
For the independent traveler, the Samoeng Loop is a legendary motorbike ride through the stunning hills west of Chiang Mai. This 100-kilometer loop takes you through winding mountain roads, past coffee plantations, small villages, and lookout points with magnificent vistas.
What to Do: Rent a scooter or motorbike and set off at your own pace. Stop for a coffee at one of the many hilltop cafes, visit the Mon Cham hill tribe village, and simply enjoy the freedom of the open road. Make sure you are a confident rider before attempting this trip.
Good for: Adventurous solo travelers or couples, photography, and scenic drives.
Travel Time: The loop itself takes a full day to enjoy properly.

Mae Kampong Village
Nestled in a steep valley amidst dense jungle, Mae Kampong Village is a beautiful example of community-based tourism. This charming teakwood village is built on seven levels alongside a flowing stream and is famous for its tea plantations and traditional way of life.
What to Do: Walk the charming main street, visit a tea factory to see the process of making miang (fermented tea leaves), and hike to the nearby Mae Kampong Waterfall. The real magic is in simply relaxing. Sit on the balcony of one of the rustic coffee shops built over the stream, listen to the water, and breathe in the fresh, cool mountain air. For a truly immersive experience, consider staying overnight in a homestay.
Good for: Culture, relaxation, coffee lovers, and photographers.
Travel Time: ~1 hour drive east of Chiang Mai.
Note: I also drove to Mae Kampong Village in my rental car, but please be aware that the roads in the village are EXTREMELY steep and narrow. Driving here is not for the faint of heart.
Planning Tips
Getting There: For most of these trips, the most convenient and flexible option is to hire a private songthaew (red truck) or a car with a driver for the day. You can negotiate a rate that includes waiting time. Organized group tours are also widely available for popular destinations like Doi Inthanon and ethical elephant sanctuaries.
What to Bring: Sunscreen, insect repellent, a raincoat (especially in the rainy season), comfortable walking shoes, and a reusable water bottle.
Timing: Start your day early to beat the crowds at popular spots and enjoy the coolest part of the day for exploring.
